Supporting Care for 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth
The Parry Sound Family Health Team, Medical Associates, and Rugged Shores Family Health, in partnership with Sound Youth Counselling, is developing a lunch and learn series to support professionals in the provision of 2SLGBTQIA+ and gender-affirming health care for youth.
In preparation for the series, we would like to hear about some of your experiences, challenges, and areas you may like further information. Please take a few minutes to complete the anonymous survey below.
First, a few clarifying definitions:
Youth and young people references 12-24 year-olds (as defined by the United Nations).
2SLGBTQIA+ affirming care encompasses all aspects of care for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, such as: gender-affirming care, healthcare related to sexual orientation, mental health support, and social services to address discrimination and other challenges. The acronym stands for:
Two-Spirit: used by some Indigenous peoples to describe a person who holds both a male and female spirit, or who has a gender identity that is neither male nor female.
Lesbian: a woman who is attracted to other women.
Gay: a person who is attracted to people of the same gender.
Bisexual: a person who is attracted to both men and women.
Transgender: a person whose gender identity is different from the sex they were assigned at birth.
Queer: used by some people to describe a wide range of sexual and gender identities, including those that are not heterosexual or cisgender.
Intersex: a person born with sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female.
Asexual: a person who does not experience sexual attraction.
Gender-affirming care is specifically focused on gender identity and may include things like: hormone therapy, surgery, or support with adjustments like name and pronoun changes.
