Supporting Youth Mental Health First Aid

The Supporting Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Course builds the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to support a young person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health or substance use crisis, until professional help becomes available.

It was designed for adults who want to learn more about how to recognize when a may be struggling and how to offer meaningful support.

Course Format

The Supporting Youth MHFA course is a delivered through 3 Modules:

  • Module 1: self-paced and completed online prior to the course start (approximately 2-hours).

  • Module 2 & 3: facilitated for deeper learning, with interactive discussions and scenario-based activities to help participants explore how to recognize emerging signs of mental health issues and provide effective support in both everyday and crisis situations.

Training introduces the evidence-based ALGES framework:

  • Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis

  • Listen and communicate non-judgmentally

  • Give reassurance and information

  • Encourage professional and other supports

  • Support self-care for both the person and yourself

Colleen McLean is the owner and clinical director of SYC. With over 25-years experience working with children and youth, Colleen has dedicated her career to supporting young individuals in overcoming challenges, building resilience, and achieving their full potential. She is committed to advancing mental health support in our community.
