When the Door Stays Closed

Maybe you've noticed the door staying closed a little longer. The one-word answers. The friend group that changed overnight, the grades that slipped, or the anger that shows up faster than it used to. You've tried asking. You've tried waiting. You've tried the "you can talk to me about anything" conversation more than once.

And here's the hard part: even when you can see your teen struggling, you can't make them want help. If they don't want to go to therapy, they won't go, and pushing too hard can shut the door even tighter.

At Sound Youth Counselling, our therapists have spent their careers working with kids and teens first, long before they became counsellors. They know that connection has to come before anything else. No lectures, no judgment, just a real conversation your teen might actually want to keep having.

What Is Teen Counselling?

Teen counselling is a space for young people, generally starting around age 12, to work through what's going on in their lives with a therapist trained specifically to work with adolescents. That might mean anxiety, low mood, big transitions, family conflict, or just feeling stuck. Sessions happen in person in Parry Sound or Huntsville, or virtually anywhere in Ontario, so distance or a packed school schedule doesn't have to get in the way. There's no strict cutoff age and no one-size-fits-all approach. What matters most is finding a therapist your teen can actually be honest with.

Our Team

Our team brings decades of combined experience working specifically teens, not general practice that later expanded to include them. That experience spans Children's Aid Society and crisis mental health work, certified trauma therapy, and play and nature-based approaches. Across the team, the shared philosophy is the same: build trust before exploring change.

Sessions often happen in the office, and sometimes they happen walking a trail or down by the water. What matters is meeting your teen somewhere they can actually talk.

  • Trauma-informed, strengths-based therapists who specialize in adolescents, not general practitioners who "also see teens"

  • Coverage through VQRP, NIHB, Métis Nation of Ontario, and TELUS e-claims, depending on your provider and therapist

  • In-person options in Parry Sound and Huntsville, plus virtual counselling anywhere in Ontario
