When it all feels like too much

It’s so easy to become weighted down by our to-do lists and worries. So much of what we do requires intense mental focus, but this narrow perspective can trap us in unhelpful thought patterns and high levels of stress.

So what can we do about it? Well, if you want a research-backed idea, get outside.

When things feel too big to carry, find a space that offers a broad perspective (like the picture we shared, find a horizon…).

Why it works:

  • When we're stressed, our vision narrows (literally - we focus on what is directly in front of us). Staring at the horizon forces our eyes to widen their peripheral vision, which signals our brain to soften its focus.

  • When we're outside, we don't have to focus as intensely as we do when we're inside and task-oriented. There is an ease, an effortlessness, to the awareness we get of the sights, sounds, and smells around us. We become fully present in the moment.

  • And for an added bonus, this all helps to calm our nervous system, too!

So if you need a sign to spend some time outside today, here it is.
